I am going to take one artist and look at how two different videos show very different representations of the same artist. I am going to use rihanna as she is an artist who has has a recent image change, which is reflected through the music videos of her tracks.
The first track that i am going to use is Rehab by Rihanna. This video shows a more sophisticated woman which is evident from the clothes that she wears as they are bright and stylish giving her a more adult representation. This is compared to some of her earlier videos such as pon de replay which suggests a younger representation through the clothes that she wears which are less stylish and more teenage dancer. This video has a serious tone to it with simple naturalistic lighting which changes from day to night and a male interest charatcer who is showing how adult Rihanna now is and what a serious relationship she is in. Compare this video to Pon de replay, which has a more upbeat tone with dancing and bright club lighting as well as crowds of people around her suggesting that she is popular. The first video takes a more illustrative approch, creating an easy to follow narrative which relates to the song where as the second video uses more of an amplificative approach basing the video around a lyric " wont you turn the music up" as the video cuts back to a close up of the DJ turning the music up.

His theory suggested that in a music video there has to be some type of narrative running through it. He suggested that there are 3 types of narrative:
1. Illustrative- which is a straight forward narrative which is easy to visually follow.
2. Amplificative- which involves taking one part of the track such as a line from the song and focusing the video around it.
3. Disjunctive - which has no relation to the the song it appear a random piece of footage compared to the track itself.
There is also another basic style, a 'performance video', which involves using the bands live performances to become part or all of the music video allowing the audience to see what a gig by that band would be like with actually seeing them live. This creates a certain popular, energetic, exciting vibe for the band.

directors
We have begun to research some directors, looking at several music videos from Chris Cunningham and Anton Corbijn, looking in particular at the representations they create of the artist as well as the track itself.
Through researching Chris Cunningham i have found that he has directed many videos such as: Madonna - Frozen, Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy, Placebo - 36 Degrees, The Horrors - Sheena is a Parasite and many more. His style is very unique working with many underground artist as well as directing Madonnas frozen video. One video he made in 1997 put him firmly on the map for every artist. The 'come to daddy' video shows a warped world which involves using clever effects to create a dark distorted world based in and around an estate. This creates representations for the artist and track creating a
Another director that we ahve looked at is Anton Corbijn, who's work includes: The Killers - All These Things That I've Done, Coldplay - Talk, Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box and U2 - One. He is widely acknowledged by the music industry, mainly for being the creative director of the visual output of bands like Depeche Mode and U2, having handled the principal promotion and sleeve photography for both for more than a decade.
